Priya Udayapppan, MD, recently completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training with Complete Yoga Training in Honolulu, but she’s been practicing yoga her whole life.
Growing up in Virginia, her family received yoga instruction in their home from a proficient Indian teacher. In high school she took Bikram classes with her mom, a physically intense practice that both of them, fire signs ❤️🔥, enjoyed.
When Priya went to medical school in India, she met her teacher Rashmi Prithviraj and her practice became more personal. Rashmi offered yoga classes in her basement (with snacks!), and Priya found herself in a sweet community of like-minded people.
She continued to practice during her residency in Omaha, Nebraska (coincidentally, the land-locked state where I began my yoga journey). She appreciates that yoga has become so widely available, and has found friendly spaces where people share a love of the practice.
She moved to Honolulu last year for work, and when the hospital learned she was taking teacher training her chief nominated her “Wellness Champion” and she began teaching to a small cohort over lunch breaks.
As she progressed through teacher training, she started to re-evaluate her goals and made some big decisions.
Yoga teacher training fully changes your life and how you see the world.
As my teacher Michelle Marlahan said on our first day of training, “Yoga will ruin life as you know it.” (Proceed with curiosity!)
Instead of staying in Hawai‘i as planned, Priya and her soon-to-be husband have decided to move back to Nebraska with family for a bit of a slower pace and more ease in their lives.
And she is carrying what she is learning into her medical practice.
“There’s a lot that western medicine can offer, but there’s still a lot… that could be integrated into the health space about treating a human being from an emotional, spiritual, mental, physical perspective…
“I want to keep learning, I want to keep growing, and ultimately that’s going to help me and my patients…”
More courageous and compassionate physicians like Dr. Udayappan will shift the culture of healthcare. 🌍
It’s going to help all of us.
